A whiskey distillery surrounded by a forest, which is rare in the world.
It was established in 1973 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Suntory Whisky in Hakushu Town, one of the most famous water areas in Japan, as the company’s second distillery after the Yamazaki Distillery.
The distillery produces malt whiskey for blended whiskey and single malt whiskey “Hakushu”.
Part of the distillery is open for tours, and visitors can see the whisky production process and mineral water bottling for free. There is also a whisky museum where visitors can learn about the history of whisky. From the viewpoint of protecting the water source, the distillery has a vast forest, and bird-watching parties are held regularly.
The distillery tour (fee required; over 20 years old; reservation required) allows visitors to observe the malt whiskey production process and enjoy tasting “Hakushu” whiskey under the guidance of the staff.
During the site tour (free of charge, reservation required), visitors can also fully enjoy the extensive facilities such as the Whisky Museum where they can learn about the world’s whiskey culture, “BAR Hakushu” where they can enjoy various Suntory whiskeys, a store where they can purchase exclusive distillery goods, and a restaurant that makes use of local ingredients.
Visitors can also enjoy the great nature of Hakushu by strolling through the “Bird Sanctuary,” a walking course located on the premises, while listening to the chirping of wild birds.
